Modest activewear has come a long way. A few years ago, covering up for a workout often meant wearing oversized, heavy clothes that were hot and awkward to move in. Today you can find soft, stretchy, full-coverage pieces designed for movement from the start.
If you are shopping for modest gym wear in South Africa and aren't sure where to begin, this guide covers what to look for.
What is modest activewear?
Modest activewear is workout clothing designed to give more coverage than standard sportswear, usually with longer lines, higher necklines, longer sleeves and relaxed cuts, while still being comfortable and flexible enough to train in. Many women choose it for religious, cultural or personal reasons, and plenty simply prefer to feel covered and comfortable.
1. Check the coverage
Start with the basics. Look for:
- High collars or necklines that stay in place when you bend, stretch or lift
- Longer sleeves that don't ride up your arms
- Longer tops that cover you through squats, lunges and floor work
- Full-length bottoms in a cut you feel comfortable in
A quarter-zip top with a high collar, like our Q-Tee, gives coverage at the neck while the zip lets you cool down mid-session.
2. Look for the right fabric
Fabric makes or breaks a workout outfit. For modest activewear, you want something that is:
- Stretchy, so it moves with you rather than against you
- Soft, because you will be wearing it for a long time
- Breathable, because more coverage should not mean more overheating
- Good at keeping its shape after repeated washing
A nylon-spandex blend is a popular choice because it stretches and recovers well. Our pieces use a soft nylon and spandex blend for exactly that reason.
3. Think about fit
Modest does not have to mean baggy, and it does not have to mean tight. Decide which you prefer:
- Relaxed fit: extra room through the body, never clingy. This suits gym sessions, walks and everyday wear.
- Fitted at the waist, flared at the hem: a good choice for yoga, pilates and studio classes, where you may want to see your lines. Our Flared pants work this way.
If you are between sizes, a good rule is to size down for a closer fit or up for more room. Check the size guide before you order.
4. Look for the small details that matter
The details are where modest activewear earns its keep:
- Thumbhole sleeves keep sleeves in place and add coverage over your wrists and hands
- A high collar that doesn't gape
- A longer length so you stay covered when you move
We wrote more about this in our post on thumbhole sleeves.
5. Do a quick coverage test
Before you commit to a piece, try this at home:
- Stretch the fabric gently between your hands and hold it up to the light. If you can see through it, it may be too sheer when worn.
- Bend over, squat and reach overhead in front of a mirror.
- Raise both arms and check that the hem and sleeves stay where they should.
6. Consider buying local
Buying from a small South African brand means shorter delivery times and easier support if something is not right. Lala is made in South Africa and delivers nationwide in 2 to 5 business days.
Quick checklist
- Does it cover what I want it to cover when I move?
- Is the fabric soft, stretchy and breathable?
- Is the fit relaxed or fitted in the way I like?
- Does it have details like thumbholes and a high collar?
- Can I return it if the size is wrong?
